Alvernia Shuts Out Villa Julie, 6-0, In Regular Season Finale

Crusaders Await PAC Semifinal Opponent

Reading , PA (Oct. 28, 2005) – Junior forwards Jessie Titus (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and Becky Macchione (Richland, PA/Conrad Weiser) scored a pair of goals each and senior goalie Carey Manzolillo (Bernville, PA/Governor Mifflin) made five saves on senior day to lead Alvernia College to a 6-0 win over Villa Julie Friday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.

The Crusaders scored early and often with three goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. Macchione opened the scoring just under five minutes into play on the first of two assists from junior Megan Novogratz ( Allentown , PA /Central Catholic). Sophomore Laura Bilger ( Reading , PA /Governor Mifflin) converted the second Novogratz assist four minutes later to put the Crusaders (15-3) up 2-0.

Macchione’s 22^nd goal of the season made it 3-0, Alvernia with 20:14 left in the first half. Twelve minutes later Titus redirected an Allison Hoffa ( Reading , PA /Central Catholic) pass by Villa Julie keeper Jacqui Healy ( New Castle , DE /William Penn) for a 4-0 lead, and Novogratz gave the hosts a 5-0 at the break with a rocket from the top of the circle.

Titus added her second goal of the game, and ninth of the season, for the only second half goal. Manzolillo made all five of her saves after the break to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.

The Crusaders, the top seed in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament, have a bye for Saturday’s opening round and will play a semifinal game next Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.
