Football Rolls to 52-7 Triumph Over Juniata
10/29/05 -- Senior Mike Lomas (Broomall, PA) threw three touchdown passes with
sophomore Dominic Rock (Philadelphia, PA) and Jeff Chick (Glendale, PA) each
scoring twice for Widener, 52-7 winners over Middle Atlantic Conference foe
Juniata at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
Widener (6-2, 6-2 MAC) wasted little time scoring on its first possession.
Lomas completed a 48-yard pass to Chick on the Pioneers’ first
play from
scrimmage and Rock ran in on a three-yard touchdown run.
Senior Frank Vinci (Chester Heights, PA) booted a 30-yard field goal later in
the first quarter for a 10-0 Widener lead. The margin grew to 17-0 in the
second as Khalee Prothro (Sutherland, VA) bolted down the left side for a
71-yard touchdown run.
The Pioneers got the ball late in the half and tallied again as Lomas found
Chick on a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Widener in the first half needed just 30 plays to record 305 yards of offense,
only had the ball over 10 minutes and had an average starting field position at
its own 45. Juniata (0-8, 0-7) had only 175 yards over 45 plays in the
half,
with its average start at its own 27.
Rock had a one-yard touchdown run in the third and Prothro caught a 28-yard
touchdown pass from Lomas for a 38-0 margin.
Chick’s 19-yard scoring pass from Lomas early in the fourth made
it 45-0
before the Eagles got on the board. Jay Leonard threw a 44-yard touchdown
pass
to David Nicklaus for a 45-7 margin.
Senior Moises Perez (Philadelphia, PA) closed the scoring with a one-yard plunge
for his first career touchdown. That capped a day in which the Pioneers
amassed
a season-best 627 yards of offense and totaled 27 first downs.
Lomas, playing his final home contest on Senior Day, completed 23-of-33 for 342
yards. This marks the 10th time in his career he passed for at least 300
yards
for a new school record, breaking the mark he shared with Mike Granato (1996,
1998-2000).
Lomas bumped his career passing total to 7,516 yards, just 308 yards shy of
tying Granato as the school’s all-time leading passer.
Chick had 10 catches for 160 yards, improving his career totals to 154 and
2,028. They are the fourth and sixth best marks, respectively, in Widener
annals.
Prothro enjoyed another monster game, running for a season-best 191 yards on 14
carries. Sophomore Mike Schmidt (Claymont, DE) added six catches for 100
yards.
Senior Todd Fairlie (Broomall, PA) also made the most of his final home game,
recording 14 tackles and an interception he returned 41 yards.
Leonard completed 18-of-34 passes for 203 yards for the Eagles. Nicklaus
had
five catches for 100 yards and Peter Thomas had 10 tackles.
Widener steps out of conference next Saturday to visit nationally ranked
Salisbury, beginning at 1:00 pm.
