Hopkins Downs F and M 3

BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Meighan Roose, junior Jamie Zubrow, and freshman Leah Horton each scored as Johns Hopkins defeated 19th-ranked Franklin & Marshall 3-1 at Homewood Field on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Championship tournament. The Blue Jays now travel to Ursinus to face the #1 seed Bears this Saturday, November 5, at 11 am. #2 Gettysburg and #3 McDaniel play in the other semifinal game at Ursinus on Saturday at 1:30 pm.

The tournament's #4 seed, Johns Hopkins (10-8, 6-4 CC) led #5 seed Franklin & Marshall (12-6, 6-4 CC) 3-0 before the Diplomats got on the scoreboard. Roose scored the game's first goal unassisted after a penalty corner to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead 5:42 into action, and Horton made it 2-0 when she scored off an assist from junior Leah Dudley at 12:29. F&M found itself in a similar position against Hopkins as it was on October 8, when the Blue Jays led 4-0 after just 15 minutes and finished with the 7-0 win.

Hopkins entered halftime ahead 2-0 with a 10-1 lead on shots and an 8-1 advantage on penalty corners. The Blue Jays carried their momentum into the second half, scoring quickly as sophomore Sarah Bender slid a quick short pass to Zubrow for the third goal of the game at 39:34.

Fearing an end to its conference season, F&M stepped up its aggressiveness and came alive offensively, taking 13 shots in the second half after managing just one in the first. The Diplomats peppered shots on the Hopkins goal, but junior goalkeeper Dayna Eng made eight second-half saves to preserve the win.

Franklin & Marshall also earned eight second-half penalty corners, five more than Hopkins, but their only goal of the game came at 49:23 when senior Brittany Croll set up junior Lindsey Mummert for the score.

The Blue Jays finished with a 19-14 edge on shots and 11-9 lead on corners. F&M senior Michelle Altman recorded 10 saves in goal, while Eng had nine in her 10th win of the year.
