Kara Culkin Lifts LC Field Hockey to 2-1 Win over Randolph-Macon

 

            LYNCHBURG , VA – Senior attack Kara Culkin ( Gloucester , VA / Gloucester ) scored the game-winning goal with just over two minutes to play Tuesday as the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated visiting Randolph-Macon College 2-1. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win extends the Hornets streak of victories to 11.

 

            The score was scoreless at halftime, but Laura Christianson ( Virginia Beach VA /Tallwood) scored on a penalty corner with 32:34 remaining in the game from Andrea Fleming ( Milford , DE / Milford ). The Yellow Jackets scored less than two minutes later as Carrie Peirce scored from Torrie Higgins and Lyndsay Edginton, and the score remained tied until Culkin netted the game-winner from Samantha Howard ( Fairfax Station, VA/W.T. Woodson).

 

            Lynchburg out shot Randolph-Macon 16-10 and held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Nicole Vega made six stops for the Yellow Jackets (8-5/5-3 ODAC), while Elizabeth Foskey ( Williamsburg , VA / Jamestown ) made two stops for Lynchburg .

 

            The Hornets end the regular season at 13-5 overall and 7-1 in the ODAC. LC will host a first-round conference tournament game, with pairings and times to be announced.

Lynchburg Women’s Soccer Defeats Sweet Briar, 2-0

 

            SWEET BRIAR, VA – Junior Melanie Chidester ( Fairfax , VA /Robinson) scored both goals as the Lynchburg College women’s soccer team defeated Sweet Briar College 2-0 Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

 

            Chidester’s first tally came from Christina DiLiddo ( Sutton , MA /Holy Name) two minutes into the contest and her second came from Lauren Askey ( Baltimore , MD / Loch Raven) at the 27:35 mark.

 

            Lynchburg out shot Sweet Briar 24-1 and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Vixen goalie Kristen Johnson made 10 stops.

 

            The Hornets end the regular season at 13-3-2 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC. LC will host a first-round conference tournament game on Saturday, with pairings and times to be announced.

W&L’s Jack Palmer Scores Two in 2-1 Defeat of LC Men’s Soccer

 

            LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore Jack Palmer netted two goals, including the game winner with 5:20 on the game clock, as the Generals of Washington & Lee University defeated LC men’s soccer 2-1 Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

 

            Palmer scored his first goal in the 11th minute, capitalizing on a Hornet turnover and finding the back of the net. After the halftime break, LC’s Brian Cocchiola ( Midlothian , VA / Midlothian ) found the equalizer in the 55th minute, knotting the score at one apiece. The game seemed destined for overtime, but Palmer struck again, putting his head on a Ryan Light cross to put the game away.

 

            Todd Perkins (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) and Corey Zimmerman (Virginia Beack, VA/Kellam) both played a half in net for LC, both making three saves, while Generals keeper Ted Sheedy also made three stops. Lynchburg out shot W&L 13-11, with the corner kick category finishing up even at two.

 

            Lynchburg (8-8/3-6) will advance to the ODAC Tournament Saturday thanks to an Emory & Henry/Guilford 2-2 tie. The time and opponent will be announced on Wednesday.
