November 1, 2005 "BETTER EVERYDAY" The Official Newsletter of Guilford College Volleyball Important Dates 11/4-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament @ Emory & Henry College (TBD)
Mission Accomplished The Guilford College Volleyball Team finished its final week of regular season play going 1-1. On Wednesday, the Quakers were downed 3-0 by the Eagles of Bridgewater College. Guilford played well at times during the match, but could not limit its mistakes in serve receive. Inconsistent at best, Bridgewater used Guilford’s miscues to amass insurmountable runs that the young Quakers could not answer. Guilford lost 23-30 and 14-30 in the first two games. As the Eagles rested most of their starters in favor of subs in game three, Guilford played its best volleyball of the evening, hanging with Bridgewater until 24-24. A Quaker service error was followed by an Eagle ace that shut the door on the match as Bridgewater prevailed 30-27 to take game three and the match. Hopes were still high for the Quakers, as a win Saturday would clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. Guilford hosted the Vixens of Sweet Briar College Saturday morning knowing anything less than a win was unacceptable. The Quakers wasted little time with the visiting Vixens, sweeping their way to a win with a 30-14, 30-14, 30-20 victory. Leading the way were classmates Becca Jones (24 assists), Brittani Leathern (14 kills), and Jessica Smith (12 kills). Several career highs were achieved in the victory. Smith’s 12 putaways on .364 swinging were career highs as she moved from the middle to outside hitter position for the match. Leathern hit a career high .522; her 14 kills against only two errors came on just 23 swings. Jones combined with Taylor Brown (8 assists) to lead the Quakers to a .330 attack percentage, a season high for Guilford.Smith also recorded a team-high nine digs. Following close behind were Kaci Loeffler’s eight digs, and Emily Becher’s eight ups. Courtney Lute filled in as the second middle against the Vixens, and chipped in with three kills, two digs, and a block assist. The win did secure the eighth and final spot in the ODAC Volleyball Tournament. The Quakers will travel to Tournament Host Emory & Henry College to face the number-one seeded and defending ODAC champion Washington & Lee Generals on Friday, November 4. A time will be set later in the week. "Here She Comes…" Following the win over Sweet Briar, Guilford Volleyball Co-Captain Leah McKinney participated as Contestant #1 in the 20th Annual Miss Forsyth County & Miss Piedmont Triad Scholarship Pageant, a preliminary pageant to the Miss North Carolina and Miss America Pageants. (I hope that is right as I am in no way shape or form a pageant-ladder aficionado).Leah did very well as she opened up every competition of the evening, from Casual Wear to the Presence and Poise in Eveningwear Competition to the biggest cheering section in the audience. Teammates Jennifer Treiber, Taylor Brown, Kaci Loeffler, and Casey Lockhart traveled to Mocksville to cheer on Leah. And while she didn’t place, Leah definitely had the most energy and brightest smile of all the contestants, and should be commended for her effort and bravery for doing what many would not have the courage to do.
