W&M Field Hockey Shuts Out Towson, 4-0
Tribe Clinches CAA Tournament Berth With Victory

TOWSON, MD (October 28, 2005) over six minutes late in the first half, as the Tribe field hockey team
defeated Towson, 4-0, this afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

The victory clinches a spot for the Green and Gold in next weekend1s
Colonial Athletic Association tour-nament, improving the College1s record to
9-9 overall this season and 4-3 in conference play. Towson falls to 8-9 (2-5
CAA) with the loss.

Freshman Holly Niro (Warrington, PA) put the Tribe on the board with a goal
in the 27th minute, and W&M took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes later
when senior defender Diana Esposito (Hummelstown, PA) scored her first goal
of the season off a pass from senior defender Carly Falgowski (Landenberg,
PA). Sophomore Jessica Kacerek (Washington, NJ) put the Tribe up 3-0 heading
into halftime with an unassisted goal just 2:06 before intermission. W&M1s
final goal came 6:48 into the second half on a score by junior Jamie
Fitzgerald (Jenkintown, PA).

W&M out-shot Towson, 12-8, although the Tigers held a commanding 10-2
advantage in penalty corners. Tribe sophomore goalkeeper Gwen Hunter
(Seaville, NJ) made seven saves as she earned her sixth shutout of the
season. Towson goalkeeper Christina Armer made five saves in the contest.

The Tribe closes out the regular season at home on Sunday at 1:00 PM against
Old Dominion, currently ranked as high as sixth in the nation. ODU will host
the 2005 CAA Tournament at Foreman Field next weekend, from Nov. 4-6.


Game Notes: W&M improves to 13-0-0 all-time against Towson ... The victory
snapped a season-long three-game losing skid for the Tribe ... Jessica
Kacerek1s goal moved her into a tie with Kelly Giles and Gina Cimarelli for
the team lead with 12 points (4g, 4a) ... Sixteen different W&M players have
scored a goal this season ... W&M has six shutouts this season, the most in
one year since blanking seven opponents in the 2001 campaign ... With six
shutouts this season, Hunter ties four other W&M players for the ninth-most
in a season in W&M history ... She has 118 saves in her career, 10th-best in
school history.
