| Brandywine's Lydia Jones get
both hands on a Dana Olmstead spike as the Bulldogs tried to fend off the
second seeded Vikings of St. Elizabeth |
The Vikings Dana Cushing
sparked her offense from her setters position and recorded 16 assists. |
Outside hitter Adrienne Melvin
had 5 kills as the Vikings dropped the Bulldogs in two straight games
15-6, 15-6. |

| Newark's Amber Walker did all
she could to block and kill shots for against the Archmere Auks at McKean
high. She ended the game with 9 kills. |
But the Auks Alexa Hassink had
other plans. She ran off seven straight service points to help lead
Archmere into the second round of the tournament. |
Allison Abessinio was hot from
the outside in game two for Archmere. The Auks swept Newark in two games,
15-7, 15-7. Check listings for when these two games will air. |
Saturday’s first round
Well check out Ursuline’s road to the Bob Carpenter Center
on November 9th. Not a single Catholic Conference team stands in
their way until the final match. A.I. duPont, the 4 seed, will most likely have
the honor of trying to stop the Raiders from playing in the championship game.
Meanwhile, St. E’s, St. Marks, Padua and Archmere are all in the bottom
bracket. That is where the action will take place this coming week. Newark has
the best shot of keeping an All-Catholic quarterfinal round from happening when
they take on Archmere. The Spartans will see the return of Outside Hitter Ashli
DenHoed for the tournament, and that is where the difference in this bracket
will be.
It is nice to see two Henlopen Conference teams in the mix, however, Dickinson
High, the only public school team to defeat St. Marks in years, doesn’t get to
play when they can easily handle both of those two southern teams.
Tower Hill is the lone representative from the Independent Conference and the
Hillers had a nice year. They should earn a few Delaware Sports Cup points for a
first-round victory, perhaps, but the Tigers stand in their way from a second
set of points.
With the exception of the Dickinson Rams absence, this year’s seedings didn’t
turn out all that bad. I see an Ursuline-St. Elizabeth final right now but I'll
never count out the Spartans. I give that edge to St. Elizabeths because of
their experience playing St. Marks in these big tournament games. Simply, the
Vikings will bring more to the court when it counts this year.
Teams preceded by seeding. Records in parentheses.
