Tonight at 6 p.m., Hodgson Vo-Techs Mike Welch wrestles for a National Championship at the Bob Carpenter center. The event is the Senior High School Nationals where Welch is looking to become Delaware’s first champion in seven years.
Caesar Rodney's Brian Palmer and Salesianum's Dan Ikeda were the other two Delawareans to reach the championship bracket’s third round.
Also competing for Delaware were Newark’s Jeff Hudson, Caesar Rodney’s Duane Graham, Tony Harris and Chris Parker, and William Penn’s James Fromal and Harry Kettner.

The Tatnall girl’s soccer team suffered a big loss when senior transfer Devin Grenda had a season ending knee injury. Grenda will have an operation to fix her leg on Tuesday. The Hornets are now 0-1-1 in the young season.

Here are some outstanding performances in a few selected sports during this past week:

Baseball

Evan Parrish pitched a 2-hitter for Brandywine against Glasgow in a 9-1 win.
Jason Rogers struck out 15 McKean Highlanders for William Penn in a 5-2 Colonial victory.
Woodbridge pitcher Brandon Dennis threw a 3-hit shutout against Sussex Tech in a Blue Raider 10-0 win.

Zach Clark struck out 12 Highlanders for Newark in a 9-5 Yellowjacket win. Erec Speise and Steve Selk homered in the game.
Jesse Jamison struck out 12 for A.I. duPont against Delcastle as the Tigers won 5-3.
Caravel’s Chris Robinette tossed a 2-hit shutout and hit a homerun against Perryville. The Bucs won their first game of the year 10-0.
Mt. Pleasant’s Adam Pfister threw a 1-hitter for the Green Knights in an 11-1 victory against Howard. Jeff Reid had 4 rbi.

Steve Phillips struck out 12 Glasgow Dragons for Delcastle in the Cougars first win of the season. The 1-5 Cougars hung on for a 5-4 win.
The Dickinson Rams pulled out an upset win against Mt. Pleasant 6-5. Mike Wilson homered for the Rams and Adrian Santiago struck out 12 and had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh.
Jason Bolinski homered and struck out 11 in a Salesianum 9-2 win against Archmere.
Dan Newcomb was 3-3 with 6 rbi and Andrew Hobbs drove in four for Tower Hill in the Hillers opening-game 19-0 win against Sanford.
Tom Cochran struck out 15 Concord Raiders in a St. Marks 9-0 win.

Lake Forest hit five home runs against McKean. Steve Palmer, Jason Bauer, Mike Layton, Gary Kennard, and Chris Hanggi were the Spartans who connected in their 14-8 win.
St. Andrews Mike Primiani hit a grand-slam and pitched a 3-hitter for the Saints in a 13-1 win over Westtown.

Softball

Caravel’s Jackie Homiak threw a no-hitter against Newark as Caravel picked up its third victory of the season 5-0. Homiak struck out six Yellowjackets in the game.

In the Bucs next game, Homiak shutout the St. Marks Spartans 7-0 only allowing three hits while striking out seven. After four games Homiak hadn’t allowed an earned run.
Milford’s Diane Green struck out 11 in a 3-hit, 2-0 win against Lake Forest.
Brandy Ash and Lindsay Warrington combined to pitch a no-hitter for Indian River as the Indians blanked Woodbridge 14-0. It was the second no-hitter in a row for Indian River.

Jackie Homiak threw her second no-hitter of the year as the Bucs beat Mt. Pleasant 2-0.

Milford pulled off the upset of the young season with a 7-0 shutout against Caravel. Diane Green picked up the win as the Bucs were rapping out 13 hits. The runs scored against Jackie Homiak were the first earned runs off of her this season. Milford improved to 2-1 while knocking the Bucs (5-1) off of the top of the Delaware Sports top ten list.
Ashley Constantini struck out 11 batters for St. Marks against Concord in a 7-1 win.

Girls track

Laketta Johns scored 20 team points for Dover as the Senators routed Woodbridge 90-22.
4-4
McKean sophomore Mandy Stille scored 20 team points for the Highlanders in a 72-71 win against William Penn. Stille won the high jump, triple jump and both hurdle races.

Boys track
Salesianum’s Jim DelGrosso set a school record in the high jump with a 6-7 leap at the Diamond State relays.

Girl’s soccer

Megan Collins scored a hat trick for Caesar Rodney as the Riders downed Dover 6-1
4-3
Stephanie Keough scored three times as did Megan Collins as the Riders pounded Smyrna 11-0. Collins upped her season goal total to 15 and Keough improved hers to seven.

Boys lacrosse
3-29
Jim Bonner scored five goals for Archmere as the Auks beat Middletown 20-4. Joe Roszkowski added 4 goals and three assists.

Caesar Rodney’s Josh Coveleski scored five times against Queen Annes but the Riders lost 14-8.

St. Andrews upset the reigning state champion Tatnall Hornets in a 12-11 ot win. The Saints improved to 4-0 while the Hornets were playing their first game of the year after a 2-week Tatnall spring break. Jennings Snider scored four goals for St. Andrews and Chris Boehl scored five for the Hornets.
Justin Gray scored five goals for Brandywine against Archmere. The Bulldogs 11-9 win improved their season record to 4-1.

Sophomore Chris Boehl scored seven goals for Tatnall as the Hornets took out their frustrations on St. Marks after losing their first game of the year. Rob Howard added three goals and six assists in the 16-2 win.
Dale Jones scored five goals for Newark in a Yellowjacket 9-4 win over William Penn.

Tom Weiss scored five goals for Archmere in a 19-1 rout over Hodgson.
Dan Watras scored five goals for Christiana in a 13-1 win against McKean.

Girls lacrosse

Kristin Wisniewski scored seven goals for Brandywine in 12-6 Bulldog victory against Sanford.
Mary Van OgTrop scored five times in Wilmington Friends season opening win over Westtown 14-13.

Brenna Dolphin scored five goals for Archmere against Glasgow in a 12-2 win for the Auks.

Other stuff
Salesianum’s Rory Connell finished eighth in the "C" final of the 200-meter butterfly at the Spring Nationals in Austin, Texas.
William Penn’s Erin Mulshenock finished seventh in the "C" final of the 200-meter backstroke at the same meet.
The Delaware Sports Hall of Fame (no relation) will add nine new members on May 11: Rosemary Bianchini the former field hockey and softball coach at William Penn who lead the Colonials to two state field hockey titles and three state softball titles.
Norman Hanna spent nearly 50 years as a softball umpire.
Dionna Harris, an outfielder on the 1996 Olympic softball team that won the gold medal. She was a four-time all-state player at Delcastle and a 2-time all-American while at DE-Tech.
Jimmy Lewis was a boxer in the 40’s who had an 89-13 career record.
Robert Robertson who was considered Delaware’s greatest bowler.
Earl Sheets a four-sport star at Middletown High in the 30’s.
R. Benjamin Stansky who played with the original Blue Rocks and also was a teammate of Jackie Robinson in Montreal in 1946.
David Tiberi was Delaware’s first pro boxing champion in 1991.
Pat Williams was a Tower Hill graduate and is currently the General Manager of the Orlando Magic in the NBA.
